Our Mission

We provide the Harvard Law School community with a forum to examine and express itself. This mission reflects our conviction that journalism and open argument make a school stronger, its members wiser, and its graduates better citizens and leaders.

Our History

The Harvard Law Record was founded in 1946 by students returning from World War II who were dissatisfied with conditions on campus. One of our first editorials pledged to become “a forum for the Law School” to tackle “the gamut of public interests.” Students, faculty, alumni, and others have filled our pages ever since.

The Record has received several American Bar Association journalism awards, and our contributors have included President Barack Obama ’91, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, presidential candidate Ralph Nader ’58, and writers who have gone on to win Pulitzer, O. Henry, and PEN Prizes.

Who We Are

We are a nonpartisan publication that is student-run, not-for-profit, and financially independent from Harvard University. All staff, officers, and directors are currently enrolled students at Harvard Law School who do not receive academic credit for their work. Opinions expressed in The Record are the authors’ own and do not necessarily reflect the views of its editors, the Law School, or the University.
