Racism at HLS: Seeing both sides
Recent events have left many at the Law School wondering why intolerance seems to have found a home at Harvard. However, such sentiments are not unanimously held. Recent events have created a division among students. Some feel that 1L Kiwi Camara's outline was a naive blunder not motivated by racism -- or at least not motivated by hate.

Letters from Berkeley
This morning, at Piedmont Alternative School, Berkeley, Calif.; I teach my high school senior class a little bit about child abuse and neglect and then assign them an exercise in which they have to consider whether a mother is neglecting her child. The mother is going through rehab for an unnamed substance, along with her boyfriend, but her boyfriend's friends still come over to the apartment -- moonlighting as a shooting gallery -- where the child lives.

For the RECORD
Given that Professor Charles Nesson has stepped down from teaching his 1L courses for two weeks, some might say he has gotten what's coming to him. Nesson, after all, has been alternately vilified, caricatured and revered in these pages and at HLS at large for his classroom antics.

Let Israel fight
Israel's current military operations are necessary in order to put an end to the terror campaign it has faced these last twenty months. If the international calls for Israel to cease its military operations succeed, Israel's citizens will pay a heavy price, as the major attacks against Israeli population centers by Palestinian terrorists will resume.

Toward moral resistance in the Middle East: Might non-violent resistance have a chance?
Despite decades of brutal occupation, thousands of Palestinian casualties and countless U.N. resolutions, the world remains content with Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian land. Since the demise of white colonial rule in South Africa and the end of genocide in the Balkans, almost no other population faces such dehumanizing apartheid and systematic attempts at ethnic cleansing as the Palestinian population.

BLSA is right, and it’s only beginning
Our whole community has been shaken by the events described in the Black Students' Law Association's open letter of last week. However, I found the response to that letter even more distressing. I have heard many people suggest that BLSA is overreacting, that their demands are unreasonable, and that the proper administrative response is to sanction some or all of the offenders and move on.

April Showers
Next week might quietly be the most exciting week in music in years. With some of the VH-1 blue-chips (Sheryl Crow), Oprah audience favorites (Celine Dion), and persistent crap-ola (Alanis) already in stores, now is the time for a slew of more subtle releases that represent a total deluge of musical treats.

Brush With the Authors
Those who follow the narcissistic sub-genre of Harvard Law School exposes, which began with Scott Turow's "One-L" several decades ago, are probably already familiar with its 1990s counterpart, "Brush With the Law." Written by two Quinn Emmanuel associates who claim to have scammed their way through HLS and Stanford while leading bacchanalian lives filled with drugs, gambling, hookers and very little class attendance, the book sends up its respective law schools as places where a few well-read outlines can get you a long, long way.

Heads up, sunshine: Outdoor dining time is finally here
In the past week, the temperature has inched into the '80s and the Red Sox have pulled off improbable rallies against the Yankees. Spring has indeed arrived in Boston, and with it comes a new range of dining experiences. Whether you want to sip sangria on an enclosed garden patio or watch boats sail the harbor, there are excellent outdoor dining options throughout the city.

The seven colleges: Where we stand
Last fall, the Law School community learned that Harvard Law School would be dramatically changing the first year program. As the year comes to an end, I would like to explain some of the planned changes and present some of the suggestions that the Law School Council would like to see implemented over the coming months.

Heroes, Teens and Hip-Hop
Screw those Kyoto people -- this global warming stuff is great. I get to bitch about 20-degree wind chill one day, then moan about 90-degree heat the next. It's like one long wet dream for complainers. Of course, not everything about Boston's new Instant Summer is cause for complaint.

E.T. Comes hHome
When I told several friends that I was on my way to review a 20-year old movie, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, most of them asked me why I bothered. After all, most of us probably remember the highlights. The easy answer, of course, is that it isn't quite the same movie.
